Understanding Obamacare
( Affordable Care Act )
Obamacare, officially called the Affordable Care Act (ACA), is a federal health insurance program designed to help individuals and families get medical coverage at an affordable cost.
Through the Health Insurance Marketplace, you can enroll in private health insurance plans that must follow strict rules set by the government. These plans cannot deny you coverage for pre-existing conditions and must include essential benefits like doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, maternity services, mental health care, and preventive services.
Most people who apply qualify for financial assistance, also known as subsidies, which can significantly lower monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs. The amount of help you receive is based on your household income and family size.
Obamacare is especially helpful if you:
-
Are self-employed
-
Don’t have insurance through your job
-
Are between jobs
-
Need coverage for your family
-
Want protection from high medical bills
Enrollment is done during Open Enrollment or after a qualifying life event like losing coverage, getting married, having a baby, or moving.
